Cox Communications Harnesses Solar Energy

Macon, GA – Cox Communications is pleased to announce the completion of a major renewable energy initiative utilizing solar panel technology at its administrative and call center facilities located in South Macon.  Through this initiative, Cox Communications has covered the majority of its 30,000-square-foot rooftop with solar panels, making the project the second largest system connected to Georgia Power's grid.  The system includes a state-of-the-art mounting system and features 400 panels producing 200 watts apiece for a total of 80 kilowatts (kW) of peak power production.  Design began in May 2009 with construction concluding in February 2010.

“At Cox, we are committed to being good stewards of the environment,” said Mike Dyer, Cox Middle GA’s vice president and general manager. “To this end, the system’s expected energy output of 104,000 kWh per year is the equivalent to powering 14 homes in the Middle Georgia area.”

The local photovoltaic (PV) system is a component of Cox Conserves, a national corporate program that includes Cox Enterprises’ four major subsidiaries – Cox Communications, Manheim, Cox Media Group and AutoTrader.com.  The South Macon installation joins two others in Georgia, as well as projects in Arizona, California and New Jersey. Overall, Cox Enterprises’ alternate energy installations are annually preventing 12,000 tons of greenhouse gases from entering the environment.

Launched in 2007, Cox Conserves seeks to reduce the company’s energy consumption by embracing renewable forms of energy, conserving natural resources and inspiring eco-friendly behavior.  The program also encourages Cox’s 66,000 employees and their families to engage in eco-friendly practices that reduce energy use and promote sustainability.
